Purebred Breed history

Named after its origin city of Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Terrier is one of the few dog breeds with its origin in the United States.

While accounts vary on its exact origin, most agree that the first Boston Terrier was a cross between a Bulldog and the English White Terrier (now extinct) in the late 1800s.

The first Boston Terrier was named Judge, and he was purchased by Robert C. Hooper, who lived in Boston.  Judge was a “strongly built, high stationed dog,” weighing around 32 pounds and looking like a fighter.  He was bred to a small white female, and they had a male puppy Wells Eph.

Wells Eph was used to sire several litters, and it is from this offspring that the Boston Terrier line began to be developed and established.

Originally called Boston Bull Terriers or American Bull Terriers, the name was changed to Boston Terrier and recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1893.

The Boston Terrier became the first AKC breed recognized as being developed and made in the United States.

Care was taken in the 1900s to preserve the breed’s distinctive coat markings and “tuxedo” features.  In the early 1900s, it was one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and it wasn’t until the 1960s that the Boston Terrier dropped out of the top ten most popular dog breeds.

Breeds that have similar characteristics to Boston Terriers include French Bulldogs, Pugs, and English Bulldogs.

Purebred Average size

Adult Boston Terriers usually range from 15 to 19 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh around 12 to 25 pounds.

Average Purebred lifespan

Boston Terriers have an average lifespan of 11 to 13 years old.

Purebred body features

Boston Terriers are famous for several features:

  • The white tuxedo coat that has earned them the nickname of the “Little American Gentleman.”
  • Large, round, prominent eyes that have a loving look.
  • A sturdy chest with a short nose and lower jaw that make a “flat face” look.

grooming Your Purebred Puppy

Boston Terriers have a sleek, fine coat that does shed, but not excessively.  Proper brushing that is performed weekly with a soft-bristle brush will remove most of the hair and keep shedding to a minimum.

They also don’t need to be regularly bathed unless they become dirty or have unnatural odors.

Keeping Your Purebred Puppy Healthy

The Boston Terrier breed has been known to have some health issues.

First, it is important to protect their large eyes.  Check them regularly for redness or irritation. Also, watch for dust or debris in the eyes.

Because of their small noses and flat face, some Boston Terriers can develop breathing issues.  Most of these are minor and result in snoring or snuffing.

Like all dog breeds, Boston Terriers are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or potential lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from too much running on hard surfaces, especially when they are puppies.

Typical Purebred Allergens

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells.  These skin cells are shed by any animal, including humans.

Because of their lower shedding levels, Boston Terriers do tend to create fewer allergens as a breed.  However, if you have someone in your home with animal allergy concerns, it is still good to use caution and possibly consult the family physician.

  • Do Boston Terriers develop eye problems?
Sadly, due to their large and protruding eyes Bostons can develop eye problems. You should take special care of Boston’s sensitive eyes and visit a vet if you see issues. Regular care and cleaning help reduce eye issues.
  • Do Boston Terriers do well if you leave them alone?
They can. Bostons are social dogs, so they like it best when they are with people, but they can be trained to stay at home by themselves too.
  • Do Boston Terriers have trouble breathing?
They can. Some breeds of dogs and cats are prone to breathing struggles because of their skull and neck structure. These breeds are called “short-headed.” The Boston Terrier is a short-headed breed and is more likely to snore, wheeze, or snort.
  • Do Boston Terriers make good watch dogs?
Yes, they can! Your Boston will definitely alert you if there's someone at the door.
  • Do Boston Terriers bark a lot?
They are known to be quieter than many dog breeds. They are not excessive barkers, and when they do bark it is generally a low woof instead of a high yap.
  • Are Boston Terriers fierce or aggressive?
Occasionally, but it is rare. All dogs may become aggressive if provoked. But in general, Bostons are very friendly and laid back. They have even earned the name “The American Gentleman” for their good manners and tuxedo-resembling markings.
  • Did the breed originate in Boston?
Yes! Bostons are one of the few dog breeds that actually originated in America. Bostons were originally bred in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Why were Boston Terriers originally bred?
Boston terriers were originally bred for pit fighting and vermin killing. The original Boston Terriers were much bigger and stronger than the breed is today. Today the breed is considered companion dogs and has lost almost all of its aggression and fighting instinct.
  • Are Boston Terriers show dogs?
Yes. Although they were originally bred for fighting and vermin extermination, Bostons soon became popular with the American elite as show dogs. They are still shown today.
  • What other breeds are Boston Terriers related to?
Boston Terriers are descended from English Bulldogs and English Terriers, so they are similar to these two breeds. They are also similar to Bull Mastiffs, Miniature Pinschers, Pugs, Brussels Griffons.
